BEFORE FAME
Sam Smith was born to his father, a broker Frederick Smith and her mother, a successful banker Kate Cassidy. Before participating in Youth Music Theatre UK and starring in their production Oh! Carol, he had studied singing and songwriting under jazz pianist Joanna Eden. He used to be a student at St. Mary's Catholic School as well and became a member of the Bishop's Stortford Junior Operatics before beginning his singing career in 2012.

PERSONAL LIFE
Sam Smith acknowledged to the public he is gay, it is also revealed that he fell in love with a guy, about whom In The Lonely Hour is, but his love was not requited. Smith also had a romantic relationship with model Jonathan “Jongo” Zeizel. They began dating in 2014 but soon split in January 2015.
