Pat Henning (প্যাট হেনিং) was an American character actor, best known for his role as Kayo Dugan in the 1954 classic film On The Waterfront.
Early Life
Henning was born in Boston into a theatrical family, being part of its fourth generation. His first stage appearance was at just two months old when he was placed in a baby carriage as part of a vaudeville show. Traveling the world with his parents, he became fluent in five languages. However, due to constant traveling, he could not attend traditional schools and was instead educated through correspondence courses from the Professional Children's School. Later, he studied acting at the New York Actors Studio and completed a one-year course in television and film production at Lindsey Hopkins.
Career
Henning gained popularity in vaudeville, where he headlined shows and starred in George White’s Scandals. His success in vaudeville caught the attention of producer Andrew Stone, who signed him to a film contract the very next day after seeing his performance. This led to his role in the 1944 film Sensations of 1944. In 1953, Henning won an Emmy Award for his performance in The Catered Affair. He also appeared in several popular TV shows, including Flipper,Gentle Ben, The Honeymooners, and Wagon Train. Some of his notable film roles include Man on a Tightrope and Wind Across the Everglades.
Personal Life & Death
Henning was married to Elizabeth Croke for 32 years. He passed away at his home in Miami Beach, Florida, on April 28, 1973, at the age of 62.
