Luke Brooks (লুক ব্রুকস) is an Australian professional rugby league footballer who currently plays as a five-eighth for the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles in the National Rugby League (NRL), starting in 2024. Before joining Manly, he played for the Wests Tigers in the NRL as a halfback. Brooks also represented the NRL All Stars team in 2015.
Early Career and Debut
Luke Brooks began his career with the Wests Tigers, where he was hailed as one of the best young talents by Andrew Johns. He made his NRL debut in 2013 against the St. George Illawarra Dragons, impressing with a try and being named Man of the Match. Despite salary cap issues limiting his appearances, he was named in the 2013 NYC Team of the Year.
Rising Star
In 2014, Brooks became the Tigers' regular halfback, playing in 21 matches and winning Dally M Rookie of the Year. In 2015, he made his debut for the NRL All Stars, becoming the youngest player to participate. That year, he scored 10 tries and registered 16 try assists, marking a career-high in his early years.
Overcoming Criticism and Injuries
Brooks faced challenges in 2016 when critics questioned his involvement in games. Despite this, he signed an extension with the Tigers in 2017, staying with the club until 2019. During the season, he struggled with a knee injury but made a comeback, contributing to the team’s success in several games.
Becoming a Star Halfback
In 2018, Brooks was praised as the most improved player at the Tigers. He played in all 24 games, scoring 5 tries and leading the team with impressive statistics. At the Dally M Awards, he was named Halfback of the Year. However, the Tigers missed the finals, and in 2019, Brooks set a record for the most NRL caps without playing finals football.
Continued Leadership
During the 2020 and 2021 seasons, Brooks remained a key player for the Tigers, despite the team's failure to make the finals. In 2020, he scored a match-winning field goal against Canterbury-Bankstown. He played a total of 24 games in 2021, though the team finished in 13th place.
Role Change and Move to Manly
In 2022, Brooks shifted to five-eighth after the Tigers lost their first five matches. He played a crucial role in helping the team secure unexpected wins, including a field goal against South Sydney. However, the Tigers finished last, claiming the Wooden Spoon for the second year in a row. In 2023, Brooks signed a four-year contract with the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles for the 2024 season.
Debut for Manly
In 2024, Brooks made his debut for Manly in Round 1, scoring a try in their 36–24 win over South Sydney. After 229 NRL games, he played his first finals game with Manly, leading the team to a victory in an elimination final against the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs. Brooks played a key role in Manly's semifinal campaign, marking a new chapter in his career.
