Khatun Sapnara (খাতুন সাপনারা) is a Bangladeshi-born British judge. In 2006, she was appointed a Recorder of the Crown Court, becoming the first person of Bangladeshi origin in a senior judicial position. In 2014, she was appointed as a Circuit Judge to hear cases in the Crown and Family Court.

Biography

Her Honour Judge Khatun Sapnara is a Circuit Judge and Deputy High Court Judge who presides over family and criminal cases in London. She previously practised as a barrister for 24 years. She served on the expert government advisory body, the Family Justice Council.

Khatun has a long history of serving on the Boards of a variety of charities, and she is currently the Lord Chief Justice’s nominated Trustee of The Access To Justice Foundation.
She was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Laws by Royal Holloway (University of London) and is a member of its College Council. She is also an Honorary Law Fellow of the University of East London. She is a Bencher of the Honourable Society of the  Middle Temple and also regularly serves on selection panels for the Judicial Appointments Commission.

Khatun's Judicial Impact

Khatun taught at the Judicial College for 12 years and has set test papers and interviewed Recorder candidates for the Judicial Appointments Commission. In 2018 she was awarded the degree of Doctor of Laws, Honoris Causa, by Royal Holloway
