The legendary Cheikha Rimitti is thought of as the "mother of rai music", the folk music that put Algeria on the international map. 

BEFORE FAME

Cheikha Rimitti was born in Tessala, a small village in western Algeria in 1923. After a childhood of wandering as a homeless orphan, she joined a song-and-dance troupe and adopted the professional name Cheikha (from a descriptive term applied to female Muslim singers) Rimitti. Though illiterate, she began composing the first of hundreds of slang-couched songs. Her songs described the tough life endured by the Algerian poor, focusing on everyday struggle of living, pleasures of sex, love, alcohol and friendship and the realities of war.
