Aurora Quezon (অরোরা কুইজন) was the first to be addressed with the title, as it was not used before Manuel Quezon’s presidency. Deeply loved by Filipinos, she was actively involved in humanitarian efforts and became the first chairperson of the Philippine National Red Cross. Tragically, five years after her husband's death, Aurora and her daughter María Aurora were assassinated while traveling to Baler to inaugurate a hospital dedicated to President Quezon. In her honor, the province of Aurora was named after her.

Biography

Aurora Aragón was born on February 19, 1888, in Baler, then part of the District of El Príncipe in Nueva Ecija (now Aurora province). Her parents were Pedro Aragón, a native of Laguna, and Zenaida Molina, a Filipina mestiza born to a Spanish priest.  During the Philippine Revolution, her father was imprisoned by colonial authorities on suspicion of being a Katipunan member and later died in captivity. Following his death, Aurora and her family were cast into poverty, surviving on subsistence farming. This hardship shaped her lifelong belief in treating all people equally, regardless of social status.

Aurora was raised for a time by her aunt, María Dolores Molina, who was also the mother of her cousin and future husband, Manuel Quezon. After Manuel’s parents died, he frequently stayed with the Aragón family whenever he was in Baler. Determined to become a teacher, Aurora enrolled at the Philippine Normal College in Manila with financial support from her future husband. However, she had to discontinue her studies after two years due to health issues. Later, she moved with her family to Lucena, where Manuel was serving as the provincial fiscal of Tayabas.  Her legacy of compassion, service, and dedication to the Filipino people remains a vital part of Philippine history.
